First Day as Trainee (By Elsa Yeo)

Got my 6 months attachment at M company. Initially wanted to work and stay in kl, but M company replied me faster than any company does and also due to transportation problem that I choose to work in my home town instead.

It was kinda excited to imagine what will be in store for me for these 6 months. All that I've know is that I will be staying in R&D department and not being able to switch to other departments during my training period. I agreed with that in one of my phone interview with M before they accepted me. Hopefully there's alot for me to learn that I will not regret on my decisison.

So the first day was expectedly boring. I arrived 20 minutes earlier due to smooth traffic all the way. Casual is the first impression the office workers gave me. They all were wearing company t-shirts. No formal office clothes, no smart and pretty office girl. Awh, I wore so weird right here.
There's another girl, MLeng, from UPM doing her 6 months training too. Friendly girl at first sight. We chatted awhile before the R&D Manager came for us and brought us to the dept. office.Spices. Nose. 6 months. Spoil.
Those words are running through my head when I first stepped into the office. Apparently the R&D dept. is situated in the lab itself with the spice processing room just beside the office. Lab is small, office is small. 7 permanent female workers are in the dept. Guys aren't into R&D much I guess?

Ms. T, the R&D manager, explained to us how the company works, locally and internationally. They have few plants here in Malaysia, mainly instant noodle and snacks in Melaka whereas beverages in Subang Jaya. I've chosen to be in the snacks division whereas MLeng will be under noodles division. The senior that works under snacks division is meisyn's sis-in-law, and I happened to know another senior worker there who's in-charge of spices. Great. Familiar faces do soothe some tension in me.

And of course, we were told to wear casual and comfortable next time. T-shirts, jeans and sport shoes. Hooo~ Another good news to me! I love no dress code working environment.
We were brought around the factory to witness the processing line of instant noodle, which turn out to be the simplest among the products. Then we were assigned to flip through the files to get to know the company's local and exported products besides doing some simple filing tasks.
And the best thing I discovered about myself is, I dozed off for awhile while doing some filing. One level higher to the Goddess of Sleep. Shit. This better not to happen again next time. Couldn't blame because I had a mere 4 hours sleep before that. Biological clock still couldn't get used to it.

Even easy tasks spent my energy fast. My stomach was growling before lunch time. The first day is to explore. So I decided to try on the canteen's food. Senior advised me not to eat in canteen and pack the food up to office instead. I was wondering until I saw the condition in canteen. Full of foreign workers. Food was average with cheap price. Since I got no transport to travel around during lunch time, canteen food seems like the best option I can get unless I choose to munch some tao sa piah or biscuits.

I finished most of the task given when the clock ticked at 6 pm. But I was in dilemma whether to go off because the workers around me looked like they do not have the intention to leave any sooner. I had to gather my guts to inform both the seniors and the manager that I'm leaving. I don't want my dad to wait for me outside just because I have nothing to do and feel guilty to left. Just hope that this won't cause any distortion to my supervisor.
Well, that's all for the first day, which I expected to be quite easy and dull day. I smell like walking snacks after that. Shirt and hair. Goodness.
